Through the Window

Henry Lau stared out his dorm room window at the city streets tens of stories below his feet. Across the street, a corner store’s lights flickered in the darkness, empty save for the girl who manned the counter on Wednesday nights. It would be so easy, he reflected, to go down and buy something to make him forget -- but no, his dorm mates would surely notice, and he had sworn to himself that he would not bother them after a long day of schedules and performances.

Two stories above the corner store were occupied by a night club that only operated the last two days of the week. His friends here had managed to drag him there once; he hadn’t enjoyed the experience much, too overcome by language barriers and strangely throbbing music to do more than stand around awkwardly.

A blinking light in the sky dragged his attention away form his thoughts. He glanced up, his locking his gaze onto a low-flying plane.

Envy for the passengers on board spread through him. Those people were free, on their way to vacations in Taiwan or Tokyo, or maybe even Jeju Island. Those people wanted to escape their lives; Henry just wanted to go home.

Down below, the scene had changed. In front of the store, a young man had claimed a spot for himself and his guitar, carefully strumming to passerby. Slowly, his guitar case filled with small bills, and, eventually, he packed up all his earnings for the night and went away.

Resigned, Henry stepped away from the window as the sun rose, gingerly lifting his violin to his shoulder as he went.

Slowly, softly, he began to play.

Notes: this was originally a Creative Writing assignment that my teacher really loved. She wants me to continue it, but I have no idea how, so I'm posting it on here instead. It's super short, only 284 words, so it takes up exactly a page, double spaced, Helvetica font (because My computer is a Mac and TNR is soooo 1998). I feel as though my best pieces are short sketches like this one orz.
